I live in a pretty bad area and everywhere on the news and radio i always hear about girls bein attacked and raped. I’m only 16 and I’ve been sexually assaulted in my life but never raped, I always thought if you just didn’t let them there was nothin they could do, & if it happened, then it was your fault. But it is so common and has happened to people I’m really close to & I know that it’s never your fault. I just want ideas on how to keep myself safe as a young pretty girl growin up in a bad area

Buy yourself some pepper spray with UV dye in it. The dye can be used by police to identify a suspect. Make sure you get pepper spray and not mace. Pepper spray is more effective because it causes the eyes, mouth and throat to swell. The reaction to mace is too dependent on pain to be effective. People on certain drugs or with high tolerance to pain can basically ignore mace.
The key thing is to always be aware of your surroundings! Don’t walk around with headphones on or babbling on your cell phone. Make sure you know who is around you at all times.
Don’t walk alone. Lock your doors and windows. Make sure you know where the closest police station is.
Don’t put yourself in bad situations. Avoid crazy parties or iffy areas. If you go to a party make sure you have at least one friend that stays by your side the entire night. Do not split up, and watch out for each other. Be aware of date rape drugs. Never let go of your drink or accept a drink from other people.

Your local YWCA, city rec centers or community colleges should have low cost self defense classes, and rape prevention classes to give tips on how to avoid situations where you would be in most danger. Not sure where you’re from so I can’t be specific, but some local rape crisis hotlines also have combined classes.
